Food Bank Challenge

Well, I’m up for your challenge Sam! In fact it was going to be pretty easy to do because donating to the food bank is something that I already do every year anyway. I was a volunteer at our local Salvation Army for over 10 years. They ran their Thrift Store and the food bank out of the same facility so I got to see some of the people who were using the services and hear some of their stories. Some of the stories were very tragic and they convinced me that I have been very fortunate in my life to be in a position to help others. So, among other things, I donate to that food bank regularly.

Also, once a year for the past dozen years or so, Hubby and his co-workers collect food donations from just about everyone in town and take them to the same food bank. I help with this too by driving Big Red while Hubby goes to the door to pick up food. We almost always bring in an entire truck load of stuff because people are so generous. The Salvation Army is always very grateful. It’s the single biggest donation they receive and it keeps the shelves stocked for months.

The back of Big Red was full again this year.

So Sam, here’s my response to your challenge. I’m a little early but that’s just my nature! I included lots of KD, soup, peanut butter, spaghetti and sauce, beans, sugar and Kleenex. I look forward to seeing everyone else’s donations.

Okay Sam here’s my contribution.

Lots of KD because who doesn’t like KD?

Thanks Witch! Your donation looks great! Plus the back of the truck full? Even Better! I'll post my story about my trip to the food bank this month. Now I need to figure out how to link this to my blog!

Way to go witch!! I am going to get going on that challenge this week with my students. We always do an advent project each year before Christmas and today is the first Sunday of the advent season. This year we will concentrate on giving to the local foodbank.

what a great idea. We did a donation through the church, I included Kleenex, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and soap in my donation.

The tar paper is incase you have moisture and this acts as a barrier.

How very kind and generous of you to donate your time and extra groceries to such a good cause! For several years I did a 'towel and blanket drive' for the local shelters. I wanted to try and do one this year and your post has remined me that I should get started!

Thanks also for your good thoughts and karma for Hamlet! The surgeon removed about 90% of the tumor and I hope that the 10% that's left won't come back to haunt us too soon. And, after watching your gazebo come together, I'm sure you could make those chicken houses with no problem and much cheaper--They cost over $1000...ouch...

How wonderful that you collect so much food for your food bank. I work 2 mornings a week at a food bank, so all through the year I often pick up a case or so of tuna, beans, etc. or anything at a good sale price. It is a very satisfying thing to do - some people certainly do lead tragic lives! And don't forget pet food! Pets are a wonderful comfort to those in need, and often the only thing they have to love in their lives.
